Black-Owned Construction Company Awarded $215M Contract to Renovate Charlotte Hornets Arena

Donovan Everett

D.A. Everett Construction Group, a Black-owned construction company, is set to take charge of the $215 million renovation project for the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, NC. Donovan Everett, the 42-year-old President and Owner of D.A. Everett Construction Group, shared his excitement to be part of the renovations of the arena where the Charlotte Hornets play."It's been an exciting opportunity to do this because it's such a high-profile project," Everett told QCity Metro. "Opportunities like this come once in a lifetime, particularly for a local, homegrown company like ours."

Everett got his start in construction from his father back in Beaufort, NC. He studied business management at NC State University, then went on to earn certificates in healthcare construction and contractor licenses across North Carolina, South Carolina, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In 2013, he launched D.A. Everett Construction Group in Raleigh, NC. Over the years, Donovan has overseen various projects across the region, including renovations at Bojangles Coliseum, CMPD, and multiple schools in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District. The company, which just recently moved its headquarters to Charlotte, earned recognition as one of Charlotte's top Black-owned companies in 2022 based on revenue.

When the opportunity to renovate Spectrum Center came, Donovan teamed up with Turner Construction, known for their work on the State Farm Arena in Atlanta. After a rigorous selection process in 2023, they secured the project and started planning.

The project, called Re!magine Spectrum Center, aims to enhance various aspects of the arena. Plans include adding 2,500 lower-level seats, upgrading concourses and breezeways, and modernizing club and food-beverage areas. The renovations are scheduled to commence in May 2024, with completion expected by May 2025.

"Whether it's concerts, basketball or whatever event, the Spectrum Center will be the place to be," Everett said.
